St. Patrick's Day ShamrockCookies for Dogs

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with our dogs, we’ve whipped up a homemade dog treat recipe that makes it easy to be green. Adding 2 cups of dark leafy greens plus a little fresh mint or parsley to the recipe adds fantastic natural color, plus a boost to your dog’s diet.

Word of caution: Too much kale or spinach can be harmful to pets with known kidney problems due to its oxalate content. If you’re concerned about dog kidney stones, check with your vet before making this treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups packed mixed greens or spinach

  • 1/2 cup plain applesauce

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups oat flour (grind rolled outs in your food processor to make yourself)

  • 2 cups flour (we used whole wheat)

  • Optional: a dash of peppermint extract or a handful of mint leaves

  • Optional: 2 chlorophyll capsules

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350º.

Pulse greens in a food processor.

Add applesauce and continue pulsing until a smooth paste is achieved.

Add eggs and pulse to combine.

Add chlorophyll powder and pulse to combine.

Add flours by cupful until a dough ball is formed.

The dough will start out very sticky. Add flour as needed to get a workable texture.

Roll out the dough to desired thickness, adding flour as necessary to keep dough workable.

You can roll out between sheets of parchments for convenience.

Cut into desired shapes with shamrock or bone-shaped cookie cutters.

Bake 30 minutes or until crispy.

Whether your dog is an Irish Wolfhound or a Glen of Imaal Terrier at heart (since we’re all Irish on St. Paddy’s), these hearty shamrock shaped cookies are sure to please.
